Meet Jim Cummings - The Voice Behind the Bear!
Voicing an Icon
It's a long way from Youngstown, Ohio, to Hollywood, California, but actor Jim Cummings found his way. The talented performer got his start by mimicking Saturday morning cartoons and dreaming of being part of the magic. Persistence and hard work paid off and Jim can be heard in "Christopher Robin" as the voices of iconic characters "Winnie the Pooh" and "Tigger."
Jim's very first professional job was about as un-Hollywood as it gets. "I was 10 years old and I delivered prescriptions for 'Zimmerman's Drug Store' on my bicycle to people around the neighborhood. I got a dime a piece," Jim says proudly.
After spending some time in New Orleans, building floats for Mardi Gras, he relocated to Anaheim, California, and opened a video store before breaking into the "Voice Over" business. One of his very first roles was "Lionel the Lion" in the animated series "Dumbo's Circus." The relationship with Disney continues over three decades later with the release of "Christopher Robin."
Jim first voiced "Winnie the Pooh" in 1988. He recalls the audition process vividly. "Well, the character had been around for about 25 years. People have asked me that before, because for 30 plus years now 'Pooh' has been making the rounds from movies, theme park attractions, to cartoons, posters, lunch boxes, T-shirts. But, back in 1987, he hadn't been around since the 60's. So, I remembered 'Pooh,' everybody did... it was just the process of auditioning. ABC and Disney were two separate companies back then. Until, as a result somebody came up with this great idea for the 'New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.' Obviously, it had been a while just from the title. I went in and auditioned like everybody else. I auditioned for 'Owl,' 'Eeyore,' 'Tigger' and 'Pooh,' and I thought I did a pretty good 'Eeyore.' But I was wrong. That was the process in a nutshell."
"Christopher Robin" uses modern technology to create the magical story of the life-long friendship between "Winnie the Pooh" and "Christopher Robin." Though Jim's contribution is essential to the making of the film, his actual interaction with the real-life actors didn't occur until filming was complete.
"Only after the fact," Jim states, when asked if he interacted with the other actors during filming. "We did [recorded the voices] the whole movie, prior to principal photography and had puppeteers following Ewan or Haley around with grey dummies. They would play my voice on-set so they had something to react to. After that, they put in the animation, the CGI computer graphics, but had to fine tune it, re-record the whole thing all over again and changed a lot of the lines, re-sculpted it line by line really. We hope that everyone likes the outcome!"
The movie is full of light-hearted, sweet and laugh-out-loud moments. Did Jim have a favorite scene? "Oh, gosh! Not really," he confesses. But I did love the scene where he's walking through the house, oblivious that he was trailing honey all over creation and ended up with a Victrola on his head."
After hours of hard work from Jim and the other film-makers, the cast and crew are anxious for more fans to see the movie once it is released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 6th. "One very sweet thing you can take away," Jim tells us, "You can't let the world beat you down and turn you into a cog in a wheel. I always say that everybody needs to get back to the 'Hundred Acre Wood every now and then and get in touch with their inner child. [That's] what's really important in the world!"
With the honor of having such an iconic role under his belt, are there any other legends Jim would like to voice? "I think Minnie Mouse would be a challenge!" He jokes! "But, there are some nice things brewing out there. We're still doing 'Mickey and the Roadster Racers' with 'Pete,' everybody's favorite semi-bad guy. Stay 'tooned!' There's going to be an announcement coming from D-23, there are events going to be happening in 'Star Wars Land' so stay 'tooned!' That's all I can tell you right now.
In the meantime, get lost in Jim's talents in the fun-for-the-whole-family, new, Disney release, "Christopher Robin," arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on November 6. Enjoying this sweet story is really no bother at all!
